Contemporary art rarely leaves galleries or museums whereas, in the West, art in public space is a common phenomenon—even to such an extent that in real estate development a certain percentage of the budget needs to be dedicated to an art project which relates to the building. Beside official art, a second aesthetics is appearing on the surface of official city architecture. Subculture often leaves its marks on the surfaces of cityscapes, trains, bridges, buildings and walls of East London, Yogyakarta and Williamsburg New York in the form of murals or street art.
